The other day, someone asked me what I do. The first thing I said was, "I help people identify their strengths and passions and land their dream job." That's a little shorter than the 60-second "elevator speech" we are advised to prepare, but it sums up what I do, and opens the door for more conversation. The person might then ask, "How do you do that?" or say, "Wow, I could really use some help finding my dream job" or, "I know someone who could really benefit from that." Any number of things are possible!
That's what is so exciting about delivering your "elevator speech". A well-crafted description of what you do or what you want to do opens up endless possibilities. It might get you a new contact that you can add to your network. It might result in a new client, a job interview or even a new career!
Spend a half hour today thinking about what you do and how you might describe it in a way that summarizes its benefits to others. Practice saying it and see if it feels right to you. Once you get it right, say it over and over again each day and watch for the results it produces in your life.
